The ideal ice bath temperature varies depending on the person’s physiology and preferences. However, generally speaking, the colder the temperature, the shorter the ice bath should be.
Starting at around 17 degrees Celsius, or 63 degrees Fahrenheit, we will start to experience cold induced effects on our body. Our body will start trying to heat itself in order to create equilibrium (Homeostasis). In 16 degree Celsius, or 61 degrees Fahrenheit, our body will start burning brown fat. The lower the temperature goes (up to 1 degree Celsius), the faster our body will respond, with vasoconstriction of blood vessels and production of more heat from brown fat. At the same time, our Adrenalin, dopamine and cortisol levels will all increase.
And always make sure to listen to your body!
